5 Tips on where to go in Sardinia in September

On our island there is no room for end-of-summer melancholy. In fact, visiting Sardinia in September can be ideal for spending a pleasant holiday on the island, far from the August crowds and with the most crowded beaches almost empty.

Moreover, it is precisely during September that the traditional festivals and fairs resume in full swing, when the sultry heat is now a memory and temperatures are much more pleasant, giving visitors the opportunity to enjoy an authentic experience in contact with the local culture.

If you are still not convinced, continue reading this article. We will give you our best 5 tips on what to do and where to go to make the most of your holidays in Sardinia in September.

What to do in Sardinia in September? Beaches

1. Going to the beach

In September, the average temperature is still warm enough to be able to visit Sardinia’s most beautiful beaches, sunbathe without suffering too much from the heat and take a dip in the still not too cold waters. Not to forget the enormous advantage of being able to get to know the busiest beaches just as they begin to empty out. No stress looking for parking, no traffic or queues, but on the contrary plenty of space available and prices in the beach resorts certainly lower!

What are the most beautiful beaches not to be missed during this period? Here are the ones we suggest:

  • Cala Brandinchi: Known as 'little Tahiti', the colours of this San Teodoro beach are, not surprisingly, reminiscent of idyllic tropical beaches. Generally, during the second half of September, access by reservation is still required but, unlike in the high season, it is completely free.

Nearby you can stay at: Villa Domus Ardea, Villa Il Segreto di Nereo and Villa Salia.

  • La Pelosa: the pearl of Stintino and the entire north-west of Sardinia is almost inaccessible in the peak months, unless booked well in advance. However, in September it is much easier to find availability and book a place on the beach a few days before (or even the same day).

The villas nearby are: Villa Lynaire and Villa Il Rifugio del Bandito

  • Cala Li Cossi: Costa Paradiso's most popular beach is located within a setting of granite rocks and Mediterranean scrub. The real luxury is being able to enjoy this spectacle of nature in the silence and calm of the low season, avoiding the crowds typical of July and August.

For easy access to this beach, we recommend: Villa Le Sfumature del Melograno, Villa Lumière and Villa Porta sul Mare.

2. Organising a boat trip

What better time to set sail to discover the minor islands and hidden coves? In September, not only are all the boat trips cheaper, but they are also uncrowded

And quoting our super concierge Carla, always available for excursion bookings and dinghy hire, a holiday in Sardinia without visiting the La Maddalena Archipelago is like going to Rome without seeing the Colosseum. A stop not to be missed, especially in a quiet period like this, if you decide to book a villa near the Costa Smeralda or Santa Teresa di Gallura.

Among the boat trips, we also suggest those to the islands of the Asinara National Park near Stintino, which are worthwhile both for their natural beauty and for their cultural and historical significance for Sardinia.

3. Local fairs and festivals

With the arrival of September, the entire festival and village fair program also gets underway, giving precious opportunities to discover the true soul of Sardinia. With food and wine tastings, cultural celebrations, and events of all kinds, it will be an opportunity to fully immerse yourself in authentic local traditions and see Sardinia from another perspective.

Among the things to do in Sardinia in September, how not to recommend the Autunno in Barbagia event, which takes place every weekend from the first of September until mid-December. In turn, each of the 28 villages of the Sardinian hinterland, the area called ‘Barbagia’ in fact, open their doors (literally) to thousands of local and non-local visitors who pour through the alleys of these small towns to discover flavors, scents, music, and handicrafts.

Our closest villas for rent with a pool in the Barbagia area are located in the beautiful village of Budoni and are Villa Thia, Villa Jalisia , and Villa Blue Joy.

4. Hiking in nature

Not only sea and beaches! Sardinia's nature manifests itself above all in its hills, mountains and unique Mediterranean vegetation. Thanks to the Sardinia’s September temperature, it can be an opportunity to plan outdoor activities such as trekking, hiking or even mountain biking.

One point of interest that is particularly suited to this type of activity is Monte Limbara, in the Gallura region, where numerous panoramic paths weave between imposing granite boulders. At the top, a spectacular sea view will open up before your eyes.

Alternatively, in the Golfo Aranci area, we recommend a climb up the Capo Figari promontory, a naturalistic treasure overhanging the crystal-clear sea. In fact, the starting point is the enchanting Cala Moresca beach, from which a 3-km-long path leads to the ancient Semaforo della Marina Militare Italiana, made famous by Guglielmo Marconi for his experiments.

Where to sleep in Golfo Aranci? At Villa Sinfonia delle Onde or Villa Kalli Bloom.

Holidaying in Sardinia in September means being able to experience the movida exclusively. All the most glamorous clubs and restaurants are uncrowded compared to the summer months, so it will be easier to find a place, enjoy the moment quietly and stay even longer.

Not to be missed are the closing nights in the discos and clubs of the Costa Smeralda or San Teodoro, where famous national and international guests are often invited.
