Catamaran Holiday. Here are our tips!

Do you want a summer holiday in Sardinia but without the packed beaches? Does lounging on deck with a gentle sea-breeze blowing across your face sound like the ideal way to recharge? What about exploring stunning coves with sparkling crystal-clear water along the Sardinian coast during the day? Climb aboard for few days or a week (or two!) on a catamaran cruise - it could be just the way to spend your summer holiday in Sardinia.

Why choose a catamaran for your next sea holiday? If the idea of waking up to the sounds of the sea lapping against the sides of the boat isn’t enough to convince you, there are some practical reasons to choose this type of sailing holiday. This type of boat has two hulls (compared to one hull of the traditional monohull sailboat), which makes it more spacious and comfortable for a longer holiday.

The stability offered by a catamaran makes it ideal for families with younger children or older members, or anyone looking for the most relaxing way to spend time on the water under sail. More living space below deck in the cabins, private bathrooms, galley and salon area allow for more privacy and personal space, something that can’t be said about the average monohull.

Storage space also gives you the option of bringing other gear on board to use during your holiday at sea - activities like exploring the coast on a SUP, scuba-diving to discover the incredible underwater world and kitesurfing on a breezy afternoon are excellent ways to get exercise while on board. Masks, snorkels and fins are always a must! All of this adrenaline-inducing activity will give you an appetite for an aperitif with delicious local Sardinian wine and cuisine.

Up on deck, at the bow, the two hulls are often connected by a hammock or trampoline which is possibly the best place in the world to spend a summer afternoon sunbathing with a good book.
Ample deck space also lends itself nicely to sunrise or sunset yoga sessions.

Catamaran holiday with a private skipper

Whether you are an experienced sailor with a boat license or are ready for your first sailing experience, there is a catamaran holiday for everyone: both crewed and bareboat catamaran charters. If you have the necessary credentials and experience to captain a catamaran, bareboat charters are available. The charter company will provide specific information on the boat and the local navigation area to prepare you to set sail.

You can still take a catamaran holiday with little or no sailing experience. Charter companies offer packages with skippered and fully crewed charters, some of them truly luxurious experiences. This can be a great option for anyone who would rather turn over the captain’s responsibilities to an experienced skipper and treat themselves to a relaxing and completely carefree holiday. Skippers also bring years of experience and local knowledge on board to share with guests, knowing exactly where to sail during the day and to drop anchor for the night depending on wind and weather conditions. You’ll likely even be able to learn a thing or two about sailing during your catamaran holiday. The differences between nautical terms like “head up” and “head down”, “sheet in” and “sheet out”, and “bow” and “stern” will be useful to know after hoisting the sails and getting underway.
Hiring a boat with a skipper is fundamental if you have little or no sailing experience, and strongly recommended if you are chartering a catamaran in Sardinia for the first time, or have extensive experience but would like a carefree holiday.

While skippers may also be skilled in the kitchen and prepare a delicious Sardinian meal for you, if you want the full luxury experience some companies also offer fully crewed charters - complete with crew to take care of every last detail.

Price of Catamaran Charter in Sardinia

Whether you prefer the island-studded north coast with the Archipelago of La Maddalena, the cliffs of the east coast or the dunes of the southwest, catamaran charter companies can be found in ports and harbors all along the coast of the Sardinia. Some offer daily excursions, or holiday packages of three, seven, or fourteen days. Some charter companies even offer activity-specific trips, such as kitesurfing or scuba-diving, geared toward those of you looking for a more adrenaline-filled holiday.

The price of your catamaran holiday will depend of course on the amount of time you decide to book on board, the size of the boat and whether or not you hire a skipper or even a full crew.

The size and layout of the catamarans varies, as well as the number of guests on board. A smaller charter will have 2 cabins (usually 2 berths per cabin), often with private bathrooms. On average, a catamaran can comfortably sleep 8 to 10 guests, offering 4 or 5 double-berth cabins.

Starting prices for a bareboat charter start at around € 3.000 in low season and can go upwards of € 7.000 in the high season. A skippered charter begins at about € 6.000 in the low season and can reach upwards of € 15.000 for a luxury charter in high season.

The price difference between a bareboat charter and a skippered charter may seem significant, but captaining a boat is an enormous responsibility, and the peace of mind that comes with having an experienced skipper on board is priceless.

So, it’s time to start planning your next holiday in Sardinia cruising on a catamaran. Summer is the most popular time to visit, but remember you can plan your sailing holiday year-round in Sardinia! Locals would argue that the late fall and springtime are an even better time to visit than in the summer.
