What to see in Sardinia during the Spring

Spring has begun! The whole of Sardinia is invested with its colors and scents that greet the blossoming of flowers in the fields. Weather permitting, and in recent years it has been more than generous, April and May are the perfect months to discover the island and its beauties without fearing the crowds of peak seasons. In spring, Sardinia enjoys a mild and pleasant climate. Temperatures begin to warm up, with averages ranging from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. Rainfall is generally rare, and the island fills with flowers and lush vegetation. Beaches begin to be visited but are not as crowded as during the summer.

Let's find out together what to see in Sardinia in spring. Well, let's go!

1. The scents and colours of nature in Sardinia during spring:

Spring transforms not only the landscape but also the scents that the Mediterranean scrub in bloom releases, entrusting to the breeze the precious pollens of rosemary flowers and all the other shrubs that cover the landscapes in an explosion of colors. In our opinion, the best opportunity to enjoy these shows is by the various treks that cross Northern Sardinia. Monte Nieddu, for example, is a few kilometers from San Teodoro, in the province of Nuoro, with its path between rocks smoothed by the wind, the small river that culminates with a splendid waterfall, natural pools, and panoramic points from which to admire the landscape, will give an unforgettable experience. 2. The Beaches and the crystal clear sea

It is not news that Sardinia is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. A beauty that attracts millions of travellers from all over the world every year. The "queen among the beautiful" always remains the beach of La Pelosa, which, with its clear waters and sand similar to powdered sugar, has made Stintino, a little village in the north of Porto Torres, famous all over the world and a destination for pilgrimage for all kitesurf lovers, especially in April and May.

Following the north coast towards the east, we arrive at Costa Paradiso, which, among its typical inlets and peach-colored granite prominences, houses the splendid beach of Li Cossi. A small strip of sand, reachable via a short nature trail (about 6-minute walk), protected by the surrounding nature and by the emerald sea, where, in this period, you can spend time in total privacy and tranquillity. In summer, given the beauty of the landscape, it is impossible to have this gem all to oneself.

We proceed to the northernmost extremity of Sardinia, to Santa Teresa di Gallura and the Rena Bianca beach. A beautiful beach that can be easily reached from the city's historic center, which owes its name to its white and impalpable sands, made up of tiny grains of quartz and fragmented coral.

Let's go towards the Costa Smeralda in the North Est Sardinia, where we find the famous Spiaggia del  Principe, which in the sixties was able to steal the heart of the Arab Prince Karim Aga Khan IV. Today, as in the past, being in front of this rough and uncontaminated diamond, this beach transmits the same emotions it gave to the prince sixty years ago.

Our route along the Sardinian coasts takes us to San Teodoro with the spectacular beaches of La Cinta, Lu Impostu, and Cala Brandinchi. Three pearls with velvety sands and crystal-clear waters enjoy a privileged view of the majestic Tavolara Island.

3.An Island with a thousand-year history

Sardinia is an open-air museum, which counts in its territory more than 10,000 archaeological sites that can be visited. We recommend to visit the Nuragic village of Su Nuraxi in Barumini, consisting of the main tower surrounded by four secondary ones joined together by a dense wall structure surrounded by a courtyard with a well. Nuraghe Santu Antine in Torralba (also called “La Casa del Re”, in Sardinian "Sa Domo 'e Su Re") consists of a central keep, which according to the most accredited estimates was about 24 meters, and externally surrounded by walls. built at a later time. Adjacent to the Nuragic fortification there were numerous circular huts, dating back to the Roman period.

Although the Nuraghi are the most famous archaeological sites in Sardinia, they are not alone. We have an infinity of Domus de Janas (house of the fairies), Tumbas de sos Mannos (tombs of the giants), sacred wells and even pyramids. Yes, in Northern Sardinia there is also a Pyramid. This is the archaeological site of Monte d'Accoddi. Located on the outskirts of Sassari, not far from Stintino and Alghero, in a green plain, a detail of a religious monument peeks out from the ground, probably originating from rites useful for obtaining the favour of the gods. A bridge between the physical and the transcendent, between the divine and the earthly. The structure is reminiscent of the classic Babylonian ziggurat. Details that contribute even more to give a mysterious charm to this site.

4. People and their traditions

Sardinians have always stood out for their renowned hospitality, for their strong attachment to traditions and their roots: spring is the ideal time to have a taste. The warm season, in addition to the splendid sunny days, brings with it the opportunity to participate in some of the most beautiful events on the island.

Certainly deserve a special mention among the Spanish-derived Easter processions (certainly not to be missed those of Alghero, Castelsardo, Cagliari and Iglesias). But, without a shadow of a doubt, the two queens of this season are the celebrations of the two main cities: Sant’Efisio in Cagliari and the Cavalcata Sarda in Sassari. Two festivals strongly linked to religious tradition brings numerous folk groups from all over the island to parade through the streets of the two cities. We also recommend the many festivals scattered throughout Sardinia, a great way to savour some of the traditional dishes and to test the well-known Sardinian hospitality (such as that of Olbia mussels and Carloforte tuna).
