Surfing in Sardinia: Where to find the best waves

Can you surf in Sardinia? Best places? Stintino

Aloha! Can you surf in Sardinia? Of course! Sardinia is one of the most popular surf spots. This is not surprising, considering that the island has no less than 1,849 km of coastline, including paradisiacal beaches, hidden coves and sheer headlands over rippling waters, ideal for those in search of the best waves. Its privileged position, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, makes the island the ideal destination for some surf breaks almost 365 days a year, with weather conditions that create small and medium-sized waves in every season.

Especially in winter, the Sardinian west coast is perfect for enjoying the majestic waves driven by the powerful mistral winds, so intense and dominant that it has characterised the island's picturesque landscapes. Those waves are so impressive that actual surfing competitions are often organised, as well as other water sports competitions.

There are plenty of surf spots in Sardinia to choose from and include in this itinerary to discover the best places to surf!

The North-West

Of course, we have to start with the northwest area of the island, the location of the famous Porto Ferro bay. Just a stone's throw from the Catalan town of Alghero and the seaside village of Argentiera, this beautiful beach is a strip of rocks and sand whose reddish-amber grains are soaked by crystal-clear waters. Here, the currents create strong waves up to 4 metres high, especially several metres away from the shore. It is therefore recommended for intermediate and advanced surfers. However, it is also possible to take daily lessons for beginners at the surfing school located on the beach.

After riding the waves, you can decide to lie and relax on the beach and enjoy the sun and the saltiness on your skin or wander through the pine forest behind it to smell the authentic scents of the Mediterranean maquis. Are you convinced? Here are some suggestions on where to stay in this wonderful area:

  • Villa Il Rifugio del Bandito: a villa for rent in Sardinia surrounded by a vast green landscape, just a few steps away from the well-known Il Gabbiano beach. Up to five bedrooms: neutral tones for adults, and colourful and lively ones for children, complemented by a well-kept outdoor living area.
  • Villa Linayre: the infinite blue sea of La Pelosa is the scenario overlooked by this prestigious villa in Stintino. Luxurious interiors whose natural colours alternate with contemporary elements. Outside, an elegant private pool stands out in contrast with the local stone walls.

The north-central coast

The central stretch of the north shore includes some of the best places to surf in Sardinia. First of all, Isola Rossa, not far from Costa Paradiso, which owes its name to the small island of granite rock just 400 metres from the shore. Well-known to professionals is the beach of La Marinedda, because of the 'Marinedda Bay' surf contest that attracts numerous surfers from all over the world every year. But if you are a beginner, fear not: a surfing and scuba diving school will offer you the opportunity to take an entry course and venture out to discover this little jewel of the sea. After spending the day riding the waves, what could be better than a nice sunset aperitif in one of the many kiosks and bars on the beach? It will be impossible not to snap the breathtaking view with photos and videos.

The last surf destination in this area is the Rena Majore beach in Santa Teresa di Gallura. Besides being one of the places not to be missed if you want to surf in Sardinia, it is also a very beautiful beach in the area. Its seabed is basically rock-free, not very deep and with medium-high waves, so we recommend it especially if you are a beginner.

In order to reach these beaches, we suggest our best villas in the area:

  • Villa Albanella: nestled among holm oaks and junipers, is an enchanting modern, designer villa for rent in Sardinia with a direct view of the sea at Costa Paradiso. Its centrepiece, however, is its private pool underneath.
  • Villa Incanto di Gallura: traditional Gallura furnishings and a luxurious private pool characterise this villa for rent in Santa Teresa di Gallura. We like it because it comfortably accommodates up to 10 people and is a true retreat in Sardinian nature.
  • Villa Corallo: if you are looking for a villa for rent in Costa Paradiso that is spacious and comfortable, Corallo is made for you. Its special feature is the incredible sea view that embraces all sides of the house.

The North-East

For our final stop, we continue to the region of Palau, in the northern part of the glamorous Costa Smeralda. There we find a beach with a Californian soul: Porto Pollo, a surfing spot with one of the most stunning waves in Sardinia. A tongue of white sand stretching for about 1 kilometre that connects the mother island to the cape of Isola dei Gabbiani. The landscape that opens up in front of your eyes is that of two sides constantly blown by strong winds, where, depending on its direction, it is possible to surf all year round.

Reaching Porto Pollo from our villas for rent in Sardinia is very easy!

  • Villa Carezza di Mare: a villa for rent in the heart of the island of La Maddalena, enhanced by an exclusive private pool. The bright, natural-coloured interiors create a refined contrast with the exposed beams on the ceiling.
