South of Sardinia, destinations and accommodations for your vacation
Southern Sardinia is a treasure chest waiting to be discovered, which will soon get the attention it deserves. We are sure of this.
We can delimit this territory, associating it with the historic province of Cagliari and ideally placing it south of the provinces of Nuoro and Oristano.
The territory occupies approximately one third of the island, and is crossed by the vast Campidano plain and some medium-sized mountain ranges. The islands of Southern Sardinia are also part of it, such as the Island of San Pietro, the Island of Sant’Antioco, Serpentara and the Isola dei Cavoli.
It is a less known area than the north of the island, which contains glamorous destinations such as the Costa Smeralda, the wonderful coast of Alghero, the iconic Stintino and the sparkling San Teodoro, as well as the paradisiacal Maddalena Archipelago.
However, even the south includes some of the best known coastal areas and most beautiful beaches in the world. Tuerredda in the territory of Teulada, Cala Cipolla in Chia, Cala Sinzias in Castiadas, Porto Giunco in Villasimius near the natural marine protected area of Capo Carbonara, and the many sandy shores of Costa Rei and Porto Pino are just some of the southern beaches with white sand, and waters of unreal transparency and with shades ranging from turquoise to sapphire.
If you are planning your next holidays in Sardinia, but you have not yet booked the holiday home where to spend them, why not take into account that there is a large number of villas for rent in Southern Sardinia, suitable for all needs and budgets.

Not only Cagliari: all about South-Sardinia
Beaches aside, there are many places and attractions in Southern Sardinia that are worth visiting.
The city of Cagliari, the capital of the island, certainly deserves an in-depth study: a city with a unique identity and character. Crossroads of the Mediterranean, halfway between the African continent and Europe, Cagliari is today a modern and cosmopolitan, fresh, dynamic and lively city.
The historic city center is of undoubted interest and unexpected beauty.
Strolling through the streets of the port and in the Castello district, you will most likely come across the wonderful Cathedral of Santa Maria, with its superb Pisan-style facade; the imposing Bastion of Saint Remy; the splendid and massive Pisan towers of the Elephant and San Pancrazio, dating back to the 14th century. But the city is also an institutional seat and synonymous with culture, so there is no shortage of prestigious buildings and internationally renowned museums that we strongly suggest you visit, such as the National Archaeological Museum and the Citadel of Museums.
Even from a naturalistic point of view, the city offers a lot. By visiting Cagliari, you must absolutely stop at the Poetto beach, which can be counted among the most beautiful city beaches in the world. Overlooking the imposing promontory called "Sella del Diavolo" due to its unmistakable and peculiar profile, the beach has a long strip of white sandy shore and crystal-clear waters. Frequented all year round by locals and by numerous visitors, it offers various umbrella and deckchair rental services. There are also several restaurants, bars and kiosks.
It is completed by the Molentargius pond in front of it, where various species of birds nest, including the beautiful pink flamingos (called "Sa Genti Arrubia": "the red people", in Cagliari’s dialect).
Another naturalistic stop not to be missed is a visit to the park of Monte Urpinu, about 350,000 m2 wide, located on a hill from which you have a breathtaking view over the whole city of Cagliari and the Poetto area. Walking among the pines of the park and breathing the air purified by the vegetation has a benevolent and relaxing effect.
In addition to the lively island capital, the territory of Southern Sardinia offers many attractions. We have already talked about the Sulcis islands Sant’Antioco and San Pietro. Undoubtedly, they are worth a visit, especially if you happen to be in the area during the Girotonno event.
If you are passionate about mining archeology, still in the Sulcis region, you can visit the suggestive abandoned mine port of Porto Flavia, described in a previous article.
Not far from Cagliari is the town of Pula, known for its beaches and some extra-luxury resorts, but also for the archaeological area of Nora, an ancient city built on previous Nuragic settlements. Later the city became Punic, to be further expanded in Roman times. It is a very important archaeological site, where finds of world historical importance were found, such as the stele of Nora, and where it is possible to admire wonderful mosaic floors from the Roman era. We recommend a guided tour of the archaeological area and the surroundings, with the suggestive church of the martyr Sant'Efisio, celebrated in Cagliari in grand style on May 1st. The church dates back to the 12th century and has been built on the place where the saint suffered martyrdom.
