Between the beach and the hill, discover Porto San Paolo
Porto San Paolo is a small town on the outskirts of Olbia in the North East of Sardinia. It is a seaside resort belonging to the municipality of Loiri Porto San Paolo, which starts from the hinterland to overlook a breathtaking landscape on the island of Tavolara and the island Molara, both reachable in less than 10 minutes by ferry. Today it is a very important tourist center of Gallura. This locality hosts thousands of people who choose to spend their holidays in Sardinia in high and low season.
In this article, you will find a guide to the best beaches and destinations in and around Porto San Paolo that will make your holiday even more special with the certainty of not missing any gem of the area. In addition, Sardinia Unlimited offers 3 villas with private pools and breathtaking views just a few kilometers from the most enchanting beaches of the East coast of Sardinia.

The Village
The origins of Porto San Paolo are very ancient: in fact, the Gallura mountains, particularly favourable to grazing, attracted several shepherds who decided to occupy the area and devote themselves to breeding. Subsequently, Porto San Paolo also gave home to many fishermen, mainly coming from the island of Ponza, who thanks to the fishy seabed they found in this locality managed to improve their living conditions. Porto San Paolo, therefore, developed an agro-pastoral economy first and then a commercial one thanks also to the expansion of its port.
The municipality of Loiri Porto San Paolo, located on a hill, represents an oasis of peace and entertainment for those who visit it, as well as providing a breathtaking landscape on the impetuous promontory that protects the beaches of the area making them unique and unmistakable. The film festival ''A night in Italy'' is held annually on the island of Tavolara, born in 1991 and attracts many spectators who embark from Porto San Paolo to reach the island. Here an outdoor giant screen is set up right at the foot of the promontory which acts as a background and frame, creating a magical atmosphere. On the beaches of Porto San Paolo, it is also possible to attend the nautical fair which takes place at the end of April for 5 days in the most exclusive locations on the east coast of Sardinia.

The Beaches
The town of Loiri and the village of Porto San Paolo have all the necessary services for your holiday. Indeed, the village has developed as a tourist resort in recent years and sees its economy booming like never before. Anyone who has already visited this destination would not hesitate to visit it a second time. Its beaches and the attractions that surround it offer an enchanting spectacle, ideal for anyone who wants to fully experience a holiday in Sardinia. The first beach that deserves to be mentioned is Cala Finanza, a cove preceded by thick vegetation, a seabed mixed with sand and rocks and an emerald green sea with shallow water perfect for children to play.
The lido of Porto San Paolo remains the best-equipped beach thanks to its position close to the town, its services and the presence of several bathing establishments. The sand is of a yellow colour that accompanies a green-coloured sea with shallow water on the shore and gradually deeper.
Another pearl of the area, the Porto Taverna beach, similar to the beach in terms of shape, is one of the beaches with a longer coastline. Also equipped with beach chairs and umbrellas, it is preceded by luxuriant Mediterranean scrub but, unlike the previous ones, the sand remains of a lighter shade, tending towards white. In addition, its turquoise sea with a sandy and shallow bottom makes it a destination not to be missed.
The cove of Punta Don Diego with its emerald waters and fine golden sand is one of the largest caves in the area. The water on the shore remains shallow, perfect for families, while the seabed mixed with sand and rocks offers the possibility of exploring it with only a snorkel mask. The entrance to the cove can be reached after having crossed the thick typical Mediterranean vegetation.
The last one, Punta la Greca beach, a few kilometres from San Teodoro and positioned just before the Cala Finanza pier, is a cove with pink and golden sand, sea crystalline and shallow shoreline that introduces a landscape dominated by the islands of Tavolara and Molara. Off the shore, there are rocky seabeds perfect for snorkelling.
Outside Porto San Paolo and its surroundings, it is possible to visit other wonderful beaches that can be easily reached in a few kilometres. To the south, you cannot miss Capo Coda Cavallo (we talked about its beautiful villas and beaches), San Teodoro, Cala Brandinchi, Lu Impostu, La Cinta and L'Insuledda. Less than 30 kilometres north, we find Porto Istana, Li Cuncheddi, Marina Maria and Le Saline. Furthermore, if you want to explore the mysterious island of Tavolara, you can organize a boat tour to discover its secrets among captivating coves set in a majestic landscape.
