Costa Rei: what to see in south east Sardinia

Costa Rei: things to do on holiday. Sardinia

It is located right in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea and is an extremely unknown area for mass tourism, making it an exclusive and reserved holiday destination. We are talking about the Sardinia south east coast and specifically the Sarrabus region, between the coastal towns of Villasimius and Muravera. It is here that the seaside village of Costa Rei is located, with its paradisiacal, unspoilt beaches, making it the perfect destination for your holiday in Sardinia, whether with family or friends.

But where is Costa Rei and how to reach it? Despite being surrounded by an almost untouched natural environment, actually getting here is very easy: the city of Cagliari, with its port and airport, is only an hour and a bit more by car.

If you are wondering about the Costa Rei things to do and what to see, among beaches, sea and local culture, keep reading this article!

COSTA REI BEACHES

Costa Rei in Sardinia is a seaside and residential village belonging to the municipality of Muravera, stretching along a coastline about 8 km long with soft, white sand. This is Costa Rei beach, the most comfortable and spacious in the area, as it is easily accessible from the village and has all the main amenities such as bars and lidos. If you are travelling with children, this beach will definitely be for you, thanks to its clear, shallow waters for several metres and large spaces for playing in the sand.

Another child-friendly beach in Costa Rei is Santa Giusta, a small bay of white and golden sand bathed by the crystal clear sea. In addition to spending a day with your children, it is also possible to practise activities such as snorkelling or take long walks to reach and climb the renowned 'Scoglio di Peppino', whose shape resembles that of a turtle

The Cala Sinzias beach lies a little to the south of the town, but is definitely worth a visit! Accessible through an area full of typical Mediterranean vegetation, an exotic Caribbean panorama opens up before you. The crystal-clear waters fading to cobalt blue and the soft, golden sand have made it a real must in south Sardinia. Here, too, you can choose between a free beach or renting beach umbrellas and sunbeds at one of the many lidos.

Travelling further along the coast road in a southerly direction, we find Sant'Elmo beach, behind which is the residence of the same name. Very convenient for those who do not want to move around in the chaos of the more famous beaches, here the light-coloured sand is interspersed with a few rocks and the sea is a vivid turquoise colour.

THINGS TO DO IN COSTA REI (BESIDES THE SEA AND THE BEACH)

The Costa Rei area offers numerous alternatives to the sea and the beach, especially for sports and trekking enthusiasts. First, you can consider walking the path up the Capo Ferrato promontory. Along this route, you will plunge into the authentic flora and fauna of Sardinia, among myrtles, rosemary and local wild bird species. On arrival at the top, you will see the Capo Ferrato Lighthouse and Tower, built in the 16th century to control and defend the surrounding area. The view from here is priceless and extends from the sea to the Sette Fratelli massif.

It wouldn't be Sardinia if there wasn't a nuraghe in the vicinity and history and culture enthusiasts should not miss a visit to the Nuraghe Is Scalas, an archaeological complex surrounded by prehistoric menhirs. A mysterious and fascinating place that enjoys a spectacular sea view.

Near Costa Rei, it is also possible to visit the Colonia Penale di Castiadas (Castiadas Penal Colony), established in the mid-19th century with the aim of reintegrating prisoners into social and working life. After about a century of activity, the building has even become a museum.
