Porto Rotondo is one of the most popular centers in the entire Mediterranean. It is mistakenly considered part of the Costa Smeralda, even if officially it is not part of its territory. Porto Rotondo was founded in 1964 by the Venetians Luigi and Nicolò Donà dalle Rose, and is nowadays compared to Porto Cervo, the other luxury resort in northeastern Sardinia. In fact, there is a goliardic rivalry between the "supporters of Porto Cervo" and the "supporters of Porto Rotondo", who jokingly debate on which is the most exclusive location in Sardinia.
